Trip to Madeira and Sao Miguel
Day 15 - Thursday, February 29, 2024 - Ponta Delgada
Today and tomorrow are our winding down days of this vacation with no formal excursion or plans. We are resting up a bit for our 19+ hour trip to Florida. We slept in today and had a leisurely breakfast before we headed out towards the Fort Bras. We had seen the outside but hadn't seen the museum. It was amazingly cheap also, 1 Euro for Seniors. We spent an hour or more touring the grounds and reading all the history and looking at all the displays. Souvenir shops were next as we looked for a couple of things that we wanted to pick up. The library was on our way so we stopped to see what displays they had. A climb up the bell tower was on our list so we did that. Ron went all the way to the top but I stopped a little short as the last 20 steps were super steep and narrow. There was a church we hadn't seen yet- Sao Pedro - so we stopped in there. All the churches we've seen, and there have been many, are beautiful. Ron saw a store that had Ecuadorian chocolate gelato so he had to try it. We wanted to go to a restaurant for a charcuterie plate but they were only open at 6:30 so it was onto CCs bar or Super Bock as we called it for a beer, a hamburger and fries which we split. Back to the room for some tea and rest. Already over 12,000 steps and it's early. At about 7:45 we ventured out to a restaurant that the hotel recommended but had been closed. The Museum Restaurant was only 2 blocks away and we were the only ones in the place other than what appeared to be 4 generations of the family. We had an excellent seafood and rice with shrimp on steroids and all other types of seafood. A cold beer and glass of white wine with it made for a perfect dinner.
Love the different mosaic
designs along the streets
